FAT TRANSFER
Fat transfer (also known as fat grafting, fat injection or autologous fat transfer) is a process that involves harvesting fat cells from other parts of the body, purifying them, and then injecting them into the treatment site. Areas that can be treated with fat transfer include: breasts (breast fat transfer), buttocks (Brazilian butt lift), and parts of the face (cheeks, lips, and chin).
Why it's done?
Fat grafting is one of the most popular body contouring cosmetic procedures. It is a safe procedure, since it utilizes fat from the patient’s own body, which means that there is no chance for an allergic reaction - that is why some people consider it “natural” plastic surgery.
The purpose of fat transfer is to fill in volume-deficient areas on the hands, face and lips, skin (following liposuction) and the breast and buttock. It is important that you do not have any circulation problems, either from a medical condition or smoking.
Fat transfer procedures should be taken into account if you:
- Have facial areas that appear creased and sunken
- Desire more permanent correction than the one provided by temporary fillers
- Wish to improve your body contour, revise scars and rejuvenate your hands and face
It can also be used in breast reconstruction to hide obvious contours of breast implants.
What you should know
The procedure is fairly complex since fat must be harvested with gentle liposuction, as to preserve the integrity of the fat cells (standard liposuction procedures disrupt a fat cell's membrane and do not produce living fat cells).
Results achieved by fat transfer procedures can be long-lasting, but should not be considered permanent and the fat-grafting procedure may have to be repeated after some period of time.
Good candidates for fat transfer
Candidates for a fat grafting are those who are interested in naturally augmenting part of their body (buttocks, breasts, hands, face), and slim another part. Candidates should have areas of localized fat deposits suitable for liposuction and they need to be at a stable weight. They should also have realistic expectations of what can be achieved through a fat transfer surgery. They should also be healthy and have the ability to heal properly following treatment.
People who don’t have enough fat, but are otherwise good candidates may be instructed to gain 5 to 10 kilograms prior to surgery.
Good candidates for facial fat transfer have facial creases, such as laugh lines, smile lines, and crow’s-feet, acne scars and sunken areas of cheeks and lips. In case of fat transfer breast augmentation, patients should seek for modest increase in breast size, while breasts should already have a nice shape and good skin tone. For fat transfer to buttocks (butt lift), candidates are people who desire a more curvaceous buttock without the use of an implant. Fat grafting into hands is suitable for adding volume, correcting wrinkled areas, covering underlying vessels and tendons.
Fat Grafting Procedure
The fat grafting procedure can frequently be performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia. In some cases, especially where larger injection areas are concerned, it may be performed as an inpatient procedure or under general anesthesia.
The procedure consists of three steps. During the first step, the fat is harvested from the predetermined donor location using gentle liposuction - common locations include the back, stomach, and thighs (the surgeon and patient will discuss what donor sites will be most suitable). In the second step, the fat is being purified by separating out the solid fat from the liquid components through centrifugation. In the third step, the fat is reinjected into the part of the body that is to be altered - this may be done through many tiny microinjections at various depths. It may be necessary to repeat the fat grafting procedure several times to achieve the desired result.
Recovery and long-term effects
After the procedure, the fat removal areas, as well as the injection sites may be swollen and red, but this will subside in a short time. When performed by an experienced and well trained plastic surgeon, a fat grafting can result in an enhanced appearance that can last for years. However, because a portion of the transferred fat will be reabsorbed into the body over time, some of the results may diminish and the procedure should be performed again.
This procedure continues to be popular among patients because it offers very little risk and little downtime, while delivering great, natural-looking results.
Fat transfer cost (price)
The cost of a fat grafting procedure depends on surgeon skills, geographic area and fat grafting technique that is performed. You should also include fees for the surgical facility, anesthesia, medical tests, prescriptions, surgical garments and other costs related to fat transfer. Being a highly customizable procedure, a fat transfer surgery requires a consultation before price estimation.

Dr. Hirurg preformed a tummy tuck on me June 11,2015. I have come from the United States on the recommendation of a friend to Dr. Hirurg. His competency is above 100%. I received complete and accurate information. Everything was done in a timely manner. I had the anesthologist and ICU nurse at the bedside until it was successfully resolved. When I left the clinic I had no tubes. In the states I would have gone home with the tubes.
